Warning: anti religious rant

It's times like this last week or so that I am thankful for my rational upbringing and my clear and unencumbered mind. Whatever fiction based brand of religion you follow, you are limited by irrationality, indignation and tedious (and often ancient, outdated) pseudo morality.

A war is brewing because one group of religious fanatics said something mean about a dead guy who is revered by another group of religious fanatics. Sounds like a two thousand year old fable, but we're still stuck in that same old groove.

It's easy enough for the more rational people in the population to tell those involved in this current issue to ignore it, that it's only words and ideas, but as their respective religions consist of nothing more than words and ideas, the rational approach doesn't fly.

Moderates from both sides of the argument are doing what they can, but the issue arose through a lack of moderation, so they are really pushing shit up hill. The flame of American nationalism and indignation couldn't have been fanned at a better time for the presidential hopefuls; allowing, no, begging them both to put economics on the back burner whilst they launch into the the tried but true rhetoric of "revenge".

People have died, including diplomats, and no doubt more will perish before this flare up burns itself out. There are no heads of state who can sit down and sort this out. There are no borders in dispute. It's not a national or racial conflict. There is not even a sense of unity on either side of the issue. This is a decentralized issue fanned by extreme religious and political leaders on both sides of the conflict. Like in any war we've seen in recorded history, its the brainwashed, poor, dumb, uneducated masses that fight and die. The leadership will live to cause another conflict.

So this week, I'd like to thank my family, my community and the era I grew up in. Thanks for not indoctrinating me into any of the hive-mind belief systems that could have emptied my individual young mind and replaced rationality with the sickly sweet custard of Religion.
